Engineered Hollow Spheres - Syntactic Foams


Syntactic Foams encapsulate hollow particles in a matrix material. The advantages of engineered syntactic foams are uniform and predictable voids. DST's metal foams have the desired properties such as low density, high specific stiffness, high strength to weight ratios, and greatly increased energy absorbing capabilities. Applications of DST's syntactic foam include ballistic armor, aircraft structures, automotive structural components, automobile crumple-zones, biomedical prostheses, sound barriers, and vibration dampeners.

Engineered Hollow Spheres - Energy Absorption


Energy Absorption - A solid material will undergo elastic deformation followed by plastic deformation. A cellular material will undergo crushing before densification. This crushing region is where there is increased energy absorption potential versus a solid material.

Sphere range in size from 0.5mm to 3mm (bigger or smaller may be possible). DST shells are currently being used in armor plating, buoyancy, aerospace and other applications. Lightweight Syntactic Armor Material


DST's Lightweight Syntactic Armor Material (LSAM) is a composite structure consists of hollow sphererical shells encapsulated in a matrix material. The shells are available in a variety of ceramics and metals including M350, B4C, Al2O3 and, SiC. Matrix materials include aluminum, magnesium, steel, and a variety of polymers. Applications for the material include strike face, light structural, and bouyancy.
